Most lift projects that go wrong don’t go wrong in the shop. They go wrong in a driveway somewhere off Wade Hampton Boulevard, weeks earlier, when somebody buys a set of wheels because they were on sale and looked right, and only then starts asking what kit to put under the truck.

We see the result at our Greer counter often enough that it’s worth writing down. A truck owner walks in with four boxes in the bed, a picture on his phone of the stance he wants, and a plan that has the last decision made first. Sometimes the wheels work. Often they don’t, and then the choice is rubbing tires, a different kit than the one he wanted, or selling the wheels at a loss and starting over.

The order matters. Pick the kit first. Pick the wheels and tires second. If you’re shopping a truck lift kit in Upstate South Carolina, here’s what to think through before you spend anything.

Start With How You Actually Use the Truck

Before you compare parts, answer an honest question: what does this truck do most days?

  • Daily driver, occasional hauling. Commuting on I-85 between Greer and Greenville, mulch in the bed a few weekends a year, a boat to the lake in the summer.
  • Work truck. Job sites around Taylors and Duncan, gravel drives, rutted ground, a trailer behind it most of the week.
  • Real off-road use. Trails and terrain where the ground under the axle is what stops you.
  • Looks. You want the truck to sit right. That’s a legitimate answer, and it’s a different answer than the other three.

That one question eliminates most of the catalog. A half-ton that tows a boat and hauls mulch doesn’t need a six-inch suspension lift, and putting one under it buys a longer parts list and a rougher ride for no real gain. A truck that spends its week on rutted ground does need clearance under the axles, and only one kind of kit provides it.

Nobody can pick your kit off a keyword search. But knowing how the truck gets used narrows three options down to one before any shopping happens.

Leveling Kit vs Lift Kit: What Each One Actually Does

These three options aren’t three sizes of the same product. They work in completely different ways, and each one has something it flat out doesn’t do. The short version: a leveling kit changes the stance, a body lift buys tire room, and only a suspension lift raises the truck itself.

The Leveling Kit

Most pickups leave the factory with rake, meaning the nose sits lower than the tail so the truck settles level under a load. A leveling kit raises the front roughly one to two inches so the truck sits flat, and it opens up a little room for a slightly taller tire.

What it doesn’t do is improve axle ground clearance or change suspension geometry. It’s the smallest, simplest change on the menu, and for plenty of daily-driven Upstate trucks it’s the right one.

The Body Lift

A body lift uses spacers to raise the body up off the frame. That creates room in the wheel wells for larger tires without touching the suspension at all.

The catch is in what stays put. The frame, the axles, and the differentials don’t move. So a body lift gives you tire clearance and a taller-looking truck, but it doesn’t improve ground clearance underneath the axles, which is exactly where it matters when you’re off pavement.

The Suspension Lift

A suspension lift raises the whole vehicle, typically four to six inches or more, by replacing or supplementing springs, shocks, control arms, and related components. This is the one that genuinely lifts the truck rather than the bodywork sitting on it, and it’s the only one of the three that adds real clearance under the axles.

It also brings driveline and alignment work with it. That isn’t a warning, just an accurate description. Move the suspension that far from where the engineers put it and other things on the truck have to come along.

So the honest version of leveling kit vs lift kit isn’t “how much do I want to spend.” It’s “what am I actually trying to change here, the stance, the tire size, or the clearance.”

How Far Can You Go Before Brake Lines, Driveshafts, and Control Arms Need Attention

This is the part that surprises people, and it’s the single biggest reason a kit in a box and a finished truck are two different things.

Every suspension component on your pickup was designed to work through a certain range of motion. Lift the truck and you move things out of that range. Modest lifts usually stay inside it. Taller lifts don’t, and then a supporting part comes along to put things back where they belong.

The usual candidates:

  1. Brake lines. The flexible hoses running to the wheels only reach so far. Separate the body and axles far enough and the line that used to have slack at full droop no longer does.
  2. Driveline angles. Raising the truck changes the angle the driveshaft works at. On pickups with a two-piece driveshaft, that shows up as a highway vibration you can’t balance out, and on I-85 you’ll notice it every day. It’s common enough that suspension manufacturers such as BDS sell carrier bearing drop kits specifically to fix driveline vibrations on lifted trucks by improving the driveline angle, with catalog listings covering the Ram 1500, Ram 2500 and 3500, Ford F-150, Ford Super Duty, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra heavy duty, and the Toyota Tundra.
  3. Control arms and track bars. These locate the axle. Move the suspension far enough and they no longer hold it where the factory intended, which shows up as steering feel, uneven tire wear, and an axle that isn’t centered under the truck.
  4. Alignment range. Alignment isn’t optional after a lift, and a tall lift can push a truck past what the factory adjusters can correct. At that point the fix is a part, not a turn of a wrench.

There’s no universal inch number where this starts. It depends on the truck, the year, the drivetrain, and the specific kit, which is exactly why the answer comes from someone looking at your truck instead of a forum thread about a different one.

Why Lifted Truck Wheels and Tires Come Second, Not First

Here’s the mistake that forces a do-over.

Whether a wheel and tire package fits isn’t mostly about diameter. It’s about how far the wheel sits in or out relative to the hub, and that gets described two ways.

  • Offset is the distance from the center of the wheel to its mounting face.
  • Backspacing is the distance from the inside edge of the wheel to the mounting face. It works out to half the wheel width plus the offset plus a half inch.

Too much backspacing tucks the wheel deeper into the wheel well, which raises the risk of the tire or wheel touching suspension components as the suspension moves. Less backspacing pushes the wheel outward, giving better suspension clearance and a wider stance. According to AmericanTrucks, few trucks accept more than five inches of backspace, and lift kit manufacturers pre-specify a maximum allowable backspace for each kit, with the plain advice to check with your installer before you buy wheels.

Read that last part again, because it’s the whole argument for the order. The maximum backspace figure comes from the kit. Until you’ve chosen the kit, the number that decides whether your wheels fit doesn’t exist yet.

That’s how a Greer truck owner ends up with a set of deep-lip wheels bought on a holiday sale and a kit that calls for a shallower backspace than those wheels have. He can rub, he can change his kit choice to suit his wheels, or he can sell the wheels for less than he paid. All three are worse than making the decisions in the other order.

Choosing lifted truck wheels and tires after the kit is settled turns a guessing game into a specification. You have a number to shop against, and everything that bolts on afterward, from the wheels and tires themselves to the hardware that holds them, gets checked against it. It’s also the right moment to be honest about what’s already on the truck, since a lift is a poor reason to keep tires that are aging out.

What South Carolina Law Says About a Lifted Truck

Truck owners across the Upstate ask about this constantly, and the answer is narrower than the rumors.

South Carolina doesn’t cap how tall a pickup can be lifted. In the bill that created the current rule, the general six-inch elevation or lowering threshold applies to passenger vehicles and specifically exempts pickup trucks.

What does apply to every vehicle, pickups included, is the fender rule. Since November 12, 2023, under the law the South Carolina Department of Public Safety describes as the “Carolina Squat” law, it’s illegal to operate a vehicle with a front or rear fender raised four or more inches higher than the other. It’s codified at S.C. Code Section 56-5-4445. Law enforcement issued warning citations for the first six months and began writing tickets in May 2024. Penalties escalate with each violation, and a third violation adds a twelve-month driver’s license suspension.

The practical reading for a truck owner in Greer, Greenville, or anywhere else in the state: height isn’t the problem, imbalance is. A leveling kit raises the front toward level, which moves the truck away from that four-inch difference rather than toward it. A lift installed evenly, front and rear, isn’t what this law was written about. Lifting one end alone for a stance look is exactly what it was written about.

What Moves the Bill

We don’t publish prices for this work, and there’s a reason. Parts and labor pricing changes faster than a blog post gets updated, and a stale number is worse than no number at all.   • The wheel and tire package. Diameter, width, tire type, and the backspacing your kit allows all move the number.
  • Labor and alignment. A lift isn’t finished until the truck has been aligned to its new geometry.

Two trucks in the same Greer parking lot, same make, same year, can land in very different places depending on those five. The only useful figure is the one written for your truck.
